Monday, June 29, 1863

We have a large force at work harvesting wheat, with our own
family eighteen here to dinner.
Lee’s army has entered Pennsylvania.  Hooker is pursuing.  The free states have been wonderfully preserved from invasion.  But now it seems to be the design of the rebels to, if possible, bring the war to our very doors.

Peggy's comments:
The armies were on the march to Gettysburg.  Rufus R. Dawes, Julia's nephew, was marching there part of the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers.

A fine rain last night after a long drought, very acceptable; still cloudy & showery.  The locusts that have been so numerous & noisey have entirely disappeared.  They have done no injury except to the tender shoots of the young fruit trees & shrubs, not disturbing flowers, fruits or leaves.

Monday, June 22, 1863

My sister Mrs. Clara W. C. Walton & her little son Eddie started back to Illinois this morning.  Her visit has given me great pleasure & I think benefitted her.
Gov. Tod telegraphed to Marietta that Pierpont of Virginia has notified him that our border is threatened by the rebels and we must be on the alert.

Peggy's comments:
With her sister Clara's visit, Julia seems to have put concerns about the war out of her mind for a time.  It is not very far away, however.  Soon her nephew Rufus R. Dawes would march toward Gettysburg.

Lucy, William, & I went to meeting with the children.  Kate has the sick headache.
Very few locusts are heard now.  They have deposited their eggs in the tender branches of trees & shrubs & are disappearing, we find many dead scattered over the garden walks.  In one twig not three inches long I counted one hundred and fifteen eggs -- oblong & white.

The Union men of Belpre and ladies too went by here in procession -- they had five or six large & beautiful flags beside innumerable smaller ones carried in the hands of the people or attached to their horses heads.  Two wagons with music.  William says it was the largest crowd ever assembled in Marietta.  Eddie came home.

Peggy’s comments:
John Brough was a candidate for governor of Ohio.  A pro-Union Democrat, his speech in Marietta on June 10 helped him defeat Governor Tod as well as the Copperhead, Vallandigham.
