The Dawes House: The Place Where You are Always Welcome
Now available! A selection of letters and journals of Rufus R. Dawes and other family members.
Rufus R. Dawes is frequently mentioned in Julia Cutler's journals. Rufus was Julia's nephew who served in the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers for over three years and returned safely to live the rest of his life in Marietta, Ohio. He and Mary Beman Gates Dawes began a correspondence in 1863 and wrote frequently whenever they were parted. A large collection of family letters accumulated in the house where they lived in Marietta. I have chosen some of these letters and journals and published them in a book, The Dawes House, which also includes a brief family history. The book is available through amazon.com.
