Monday, June 29, 1863

We have a large force at work harvesting wheat, with our own
family eighteen here to dinner.
Lee’s army has entered Pennsylvania.  Hooker is pursuing.  The free states have been wonderfully preserved from invasion.  But now it seems to be the design of the rebels to, if possible, bring the war to our very doors.

Peggy's comments:
The armies were on the march to Gettysburg.  Rufus R. Dawes, Julia's nephew, was marching there part of the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers.
