Union Mass Meeting at Marietta.  John Brough & Gen. [Geiger?] speakers. The Union men of Belpre and ladies too went by here in procession -- they had five or six large & beautiful flags beside innumerable smaller ones carried in the hands of the people or attached to their horses heads.  Two wagons with music.  William says it was the largest crowd ever assembled in Marietta.  Eddie came home.

Peggy’s comments:
John Brough was a candidate for governor of Ohio.  A pro-Union Democrat, his speech in Marietta on June 10 helped him defeat Governor Tod as well as the Copperhead, Vallandigham.
